When I have a hard time, I don't focus on the fact that I'm actually meditating as it sometimes causes unnecessary stress in the process. Get in a comfortable, safe place, relax, enjoy the peace. While your eyes are closed use them to search within you. Similar to a feeling of searching and feeling your way through the darkness, eventually you should start seeing circles of different colors feeding your mind. That's what works for me.
